WRITER

Kaituhi. Ihiihi. Kōrero paki
Writer. Expression. Storytelling.

Writing is much like whakapapa, it records history. It recognises our celebrations and achievements, reminds whānau of the battles we have overcome. It speaks of our identity and culture. It connects us to our whenua and ancestors from a past time and yet the kupu has the ability to lead us into the future.

Freelance writing is a creative expression - an explanation of the world and its narratives through the writer's eyes. As a wordsmith and wahine Māori, Amokura creates special connections for the reader.

As a storyteller it is important for her to share these narratives and cultural aspects so that it enables the reader to grasp a point of view that may not have otherwise been seen or thought of.

A carver will use wood, a weaver harakeke, a tā moko artist an uhi. A kaituhi will use words.

Writing features on contemporary issues relating to Te Ao Māori for a broad audience contributes to a repository of stories beyond what is available from traditional and contemporary mainstream and print media channels.

Amokura has written a range of articles, from a piece about Te Reo Māori and language dialects (“The language of identity”, Karaka Magazine Issue 36, 2007) to the chronicles of Māori political activist, Sydney Jackson (“Tama tū Tama ora Tama noho Tama mate”, Mana Magazine April/May 2008).
Another article Amokura wrote for Idealog May/June 2007 titled “Is Māori Culture too precious to Brand” was republished and quoted internationally.

She is presently writing a feature series “Hautūtanga” on Māori Leadership pre and post Treaty settlements for NZ Life & Leisure magazine. She is also a contributor for AWHI , Whenua and Biograview magazines as well as blogs for Business Mentors NZ
